Mawande Sobetwa“The climate crisis is an intersectional issue and so solutions require an intersectional approach. The Global South will be the most affected by the climate crisis, a crisis that was caused at our expense and which we do not benefit from. My own country, South Africa, is facing a number of extreme climate-related events: heat waves, floods, droughts. Because of the lingering effects of colonialism and apartheid, the people in my country are already suffering and most of the population are ill-equipped to deal with additional crises. “At CoConversations are likely to focus on “loss and damage,” referring to the heavy financial burden placed on countries in the global south due to climate change. Many are calling for a loss and damage facility, or fund, financed by wealthy nations in the global north. This would help compensate poorer countries that are most affected by rising global temperatures, despite being the least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. As world leaders gather in Egypt to discuss how to best tackle the climate crisis, six African activists share their hopes for Cop27. “This is the 27th Conference Of Parties, [yet we’re] still negotiating our realities; so many promises are yet to be fulfilled. At Cop27, we want to see actions beyond negotiation and promises. Climate finance has to be at the center of it all. Rather than channeling finance into opening coal plants or investing in fossil fuels, it should be channeled towards innovations aimed at sustainable development, the establishment of a loss and damage fund, and adaptation and mitigation. “Africa accounts for only four percent of global emissions, so polluters should not be allowed to influence decisions for their good. Rather, decisions should be taken in favor of vulnerable countries, like mine, that are affected the most by the climate crisis.”7, though extremely important, world leaders need to do more than discuss ways to save our futures. Western leaders need to address the wrongs their economies are built on, which fuel the climate crisis. We need loss and damage finance. We need world leaders to follow through and fulfill their promises. We need urgent action and we need it now.”

Though they have since kept a low profile, Mescal and Bridgers have made a few red carpet appearances, including at this year’s Met Gala, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” Mescal has also appeared in the singer’s music video for “Savior Complex.” While the Internet is to thank for the couple’s meet-cute, Mescal revealed today that he has since quit using any social media. “I just don’t think it’s particularly useful for people to see, like, literally you,” he says. “I thought it’s either get off the bus now or stay on it, and I wanted to get off. In 10 years I might rue the day I threw out my social media, but look, it just is what it is.” Surely Mescal isn’t regretting his social media abstinence today! See below for the best reactions to the reported engagement. This year, the United Nations’ annual climate change conference—known as Cop27—is taking place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18. Despite being the fifth Cop to be held in Africa, the event is already being dubbed by many as “the African Cop,” with the location proving particularly significant due to the devastating impact the climate crisis is already having on the continent.
