So you’re designing a logo. It sounds like an easy enough task, right? Draw a circle, type in the company name and you’re done (I’ve literally heard a designer suggest that very process). Unfortunately, if you’re really worth the money the client is paying you, there’s a lot more to it than that. Strong logos translate well across different mediums. Will your logo evoke the same meaning on a business card as it will on a billboard? Milton Glaser created the “I Love New York” logo in 1975. Thirty-six years later, shirts and tchotchkes bearing that ubiquitous emblem still line the walls of gift shops around the world. Before embarking on any sort of marketing campaign, you must first nail down your target audience. A logo needs to accurately reflect a company’s culture and values: the company’s essence.
I would say for a logo like this you would need to custom manipulate any font choice to really nail it. However, barring that, you will need to play with color and scale. An extra black weight sans with little contrast to the background consistently printed very large might meet your requirements. First of all, there are far too many fonts that fit your description. The best of those, you ask? That’s dependent on the context: the company, its industry, its intent, its demographic, etc. etc. etc. There simply isn’t enough information here. Christine gave you several good options to begin with, but those options could be equally terrible in the wrong context or used in the wrong way. Any serious designer knows that a list of adjectives is not a design brief. If I had a dollar for every time I heard “Just something simple…” from a client… Your description is simply asking for the logo to be good. Of course it should be good. Everyone wants a good logo.
I think it’s better for a designer to keep their options open when they approach new projects, rather than setting aside an arbitrary set of fonts which they would “never” consider using. I found it awkward and too full of the wrong kind of quirks and…well…frankly I thought it was ugly. Back in those days, I was absolutely certain that I would never use Hobo in any project, no matter how long my design career might end up lasting. (“Hobo,” Eric sneered, his lip curling in disgust. “Hmph. The very idea…”) A few years later, I went to see a concert at the Wiltern Theater, a gorgeous Art Deco building in Los Angeles. As I was walking up to the venue, I couldn’t help but notice that the vertical signage used a most familiar font in 6-foot-tall neon letters… I was happy to concede that Hobo seemed to work well in both cases, but I still thought that Hobo was…well…unappealing. Which is a big improvement over my initial assessment of it as “ugly.”
