I think I owe a lot of my appreciation of beauty to my birthplace. I was born in Macau, which is a former Portuguese colony near Hong Kong. It’s a city of contrasts, as it’s filled with European and Chinese influences. While I took it for granted as a child, returning to my birthplace reminds me of how much beauty there is in the world—even in the most unexpected places. I’ve come to find beauty in everything around me, including imperfections and negative emotions. For me, it is very easy to become inspired and makeup provides an outlet for me to express my creativity. As a young child, I would play with my mother’s cosmetics, and eventually I became quite good at doing my own makeup that friends and family would ask me to do their bridal and beauty makeup. Eventually, I decided to enroll at a local makeup school called Blanche Macdonald Centre, where I learned the basics to beauty, character, and film makeup. Illusion makeup was the product of my own self-exploration, as I was fascinated by the impact of highlighting and contouring. I fine-tuned my technique through 7 years of trial and error, and I continue to strive to improve, as I have a lot more to learn.

Given her impressive talent to nail any concept she thinks of, it’s no wonder Choi has also worked with celebrities on special projects for the red carpet. At the 2019 Met Gala, for instance, she nailed the camp theme when she applied seven trippy, painted-on eyes on Ezra Miller. “Working on Ezra was such a memorable experience, as they gave me complete creative freedom and trusted me completely,” Choi says.  Below, Choi sounds off on her makeup techniques, what inspires her, and what it was like doing the makeup for a high-profile event like the Met Gala.  After sharing my work on other social media platforms, I decided to give TikTok a try to see if there was a new demographic that I could reach. I wanted to showcase my work to people outside of the makeup industry, and I felt that TikTok had the potential to help me achieve that goal. I had 7 years worth of video content to use, so it was a very easy and fun process for me to create videos for TikTok. My process for creating TikToks is very quick and never planned. I want my final look to be the focus of the video, so I usually include clips of final touch-ups, detailing, and makeup removal. People often think that I use Photoshop, so I like to use TikTok to “break” the illusion through movements which shows that my work is not edited. My ideas come organically and I don’t pay too much attention to trends, because I feel that this is the most authentic form of self expression.

Each piece has a special meaning for me so it’s difficult to choose. My favorite looks change all the time, but some of my recent ones include the block feature face, Chinese porcelain face, sea creature face, and origami face. These looks represent an evolution in my style where I started incorporating handcrafted props into my looks. The whole process was very organic and spontaneous because we didn’t even have time for a trial! Ezra loved the kaleidoscope face I did on myself in 2018, so we adjusted the look to suit their facial structure. Although the makeup application started at around 3 a.m., Ezra brought so much energy by singing and getting into character as they transformed. By 8 a.m., the look was ready for photoshoots, and by the time Ezra stepped on the red carpet at 7:30PM, they had been wearing the look for over 12 hours and even napped with the makeup on in the afternoon! Ezra was very happy with the look, and to be honest, that was my only focus. The fact that the look went viral and received so much attention was a bonus and not something I expected. It was such a great experience to be able to showcase one of my most iconic looks that jump started my career on such a large platform.
